Bamboo fly rods: Finishing the female welt on size 13 micro ferrule

Attention to detail is the hallmark of the fine bamboo fly rod.  In this series, I turn the very end of the female welt on the size 13 micro ferrules being built in my shop.   A slight change in the angle, precise measurements on the welt, and the ability to repeat the operation bring the rough soldered ring to proper dimensions with a pleasing-to-the-eye shape:

A look at the 3 different types of ferrules, SD, Truncated, and Micro

The viewer can see the differing lengths of the female ferrules, with the SD on top, the truncated in the middle, and my Micro Ferrule on the bottom.   This Micro Ferrule is from the batch that I have been building on the previous videos.  These illustrate the extremes in Super Swiss style ferrules for lengths.

The next couple of blogs will have videos again, showing the machining operation creating the back taper at the mouth of the female ferrule.

Stay tuned for more rod building featuring micro ferrules.
